Vintage, signed, Vande Australia art pottery footed low dish with matte brown/black glaze. This unusual Vande piece measures 10 3/8" (26.2cm) in diameter and stands 2 3/4" (7cm) high. Vande is best known for its painted and sgraffito dishes and other souvenir objects that the company produced in its studios from until 1958 when the operation was closed by its owner. Vande was one of the largest commercial pottery operations in Sydney in the 1950s. It was started by Sam Vandesluis, an English immigrant with Dutch-Jewish heritage who purchased a small pottery studio in 1948, although he only had experience as a set designer. Soon he discovered demand for sourvenir pottery items and shifted production in that direction and hired a number of artisans from the local technical college to produce pieces and new designs and many pieces bear their signatures alongside the "Vande" mark. Most of what the company produced was wall plaques, ashtray, dishes and platters for gift shops but individual pieces that were considered "fine art pottery" were created. This is presumably an early item due to its simplicity and lack of references to "Australiana". It is in good condition with a few small marks on the inside edge of the bowl as shown in the photos. Lovely dark, low-sheen glaze with an irridescent quality and an unglazed lower sides and bottom with an enbossed "Vande" mark in the bottom center. An usual piece for a collector, a nice contemporary art pottery piece for display or use in serving or as a low vase (ikibana, perhaps, due to its simple and natural form).
