Up for consideration is a fine Antique Old Master's "Mater Dolorosa" or "Virgen
Dolorosa" Oil painting. The painting measures 15 by 19 inches and is titled on a cartouche in the center at the bottom. It is rather dark and of course layered with varnish. It has been relined in 1975. The frame dates from about the 1860's and is much newer than the painting itself. The painting dates from the latter part of the 18th Century. The painting depicts the Virgin Mary with her heart pierced by a sword...there is quite a bit of differing forms and phrases associated with suffering and sorrow regarding the symbolism.
